24th July // Orchid Garden

Anglesey // Undisclosed

Often the best discoveries are those made unintentionally. I spend a large portion of my free time researching North Wales to find new locations to explore. Usually this is through the internet or reading books, but on this occasion a structure caught my eye on google maps, so I visited on the solstice on the off-chance it would be interesting, but really I was not anticipating much from this North facing beach.

What I found was a garden of Orchids, assumably enjoying the lime rich soil exposed from the disused quarry many years ago.

I felt like I had been let in on a secret, as in the two times visiting I’ve only seen one other person here, favouring it as a fishing spot than as a private area to sit amongst the flowers.

Clover, Thrift and Common Spotted Orchids

For those unaware, the limestone rocks of the North Wales coast are fossiliferous, meaning, there are fossils to be found. Corals can be found, but the most common are in situ Brachiopods shells. I noticed some of these in the rocks, but it wasn’t until I began climbing the disused quarry structure that I noticed them in the large limestone bricks.
