10th August // Through the Bracken into the Mist

Moel Hebog // N53.0217 W-4.161

The endless sprawl of trees, an unusual sight in the over grazed Eryri.

With one final chance to prepare myself for my upcoming Scotland adventure I upped the level of difficulty on this hike. I increased the distance as well as challenging my route finding ability, taking me off the paths and navigating down from the Nantlle Ridge, through bracken and navigating around tussocky grass. Then as I faced my final ascent of the day I was submerged by cloud, before route finding down the steep slope of Moel Hebog to my camping spot.

It was tough, but some mental resilience gained for the challenge to come.

For all my suffering yesterday, today made it all worth it.

As the sun crept over from behind the mountains to the east, it flooded the blanket of unbroken forest filling it with light. For the few hours of the morning it felt like I was in some untamed wilderness.

This is the beauty of picking otherwise random routes for long distance hikes. There is no objective for anything in particular so there is always a high chance to be completely blown away by the scenery you encounter.

I'll be back here again.
