18th March // Surrounded by Rocks

Yr Arddu // N52.995 W-4.048

Having been out for a Recce the week before, with a forecast of sunshine all day, I knew I had to return back to Yr Arddu. But not first without a pit stop to check out some geologic features on the Rhyd Ddu path.

Cheekily I haven’t posted the actual photos of that particular geologic feature, as I am saving this for my long-term project which is collecting photos that tell the story of Geologic history, but I paced my way to an example of Columnar Jointing, similarly to that of the Giants Causeway, only less hexagonal, smaller, and almost indistinguishable from normal weathered rock.

After this slight detour I headed to Croesor again and up Yr Arddu, only this time taking a slightly different (and more treacherous) path up to the summit, which had views looking back over the ocean as I climbed up a steep gully. At the top were some excellent examples of folding in the rocks - formed from viscous lava as it was forced slowly out of the volcano bending and folding as it squeezed through the gaps of more solidified lava.

Then from the summit, shielded from the wind I waited for sunset, watching the haze across the valley turn from blue to gold. Then just before the sun dipped behind Moel Hebog I started my way down, watching the red light on Cnicht fade into darkness.
